Debate has been sparked recently in the UK with the news that a bill in the French Parliament to ban the full Islamic veil has gone a stage further. France’s Lower House of MPs voted overwhelmingly for the ban, and should the bill be passed through the Senate in September, it will become law.
For the most part, British commentators seem not to agree with this French attitude, describing it as ’aggressively secular’, and emphasising instead that Britain is a tolerant country, whose people are respectful of each other. This backs up what the immigration minister has said on the matter. But although for the most part I agree with these Brisith opinions, it seems to me that there is a real moral debate here, and such moral debates can’t always be solved with the conclusion that this is a free country - live and let live.
The reason for the French ban isn’t a spurious one. The government are concerned about the Islamic religion’s treatment of women, and see the full veil, such as the Hijab or the Burka as degrading. If these women are being forced to cover their whole face and body against their will, they say, it is wrong. And I do think that they have a point - perhaps these women don’t want to be forced into submission, but for a whole host of reason, primary amongst them being family honour and pride, do not want to disobey. But on the flip-side, is it just as derogatory for a government to forbid them to wear the same item of clothing? If a Muslim woman finds comfort and familiarity in wearing the garment in public, then it seems equally wrong to forbid her from doing this, it would be like banning the wearing of running shoes for most British people.
I would conclude that in most Western countries, where Islamic families are immigrating from the Middle East in particular, the wearing of the Hijab and the Burka will gradually decrease with time. And this will happen with less animosity in a free society such as Britain’s, than it will in a strongly secular society such as France’s.

I know that in the Current Climate, jobs are at their all time low, with masses headed for the Jobcentre and jobs having numbers of applicants reaching four figures. In times of desperation, someone must want to hire these jobless workers.

But this <a title="Out-of-work job applicants told unemployed need not apply"href="http://digg.com/business_finance/Out_of_work_job_applicants_told_unemployed_need_not_apply_3"target="_blank">article, which I read on Yahoo News via digg.com shocked me to the core. Apparantly companies who are recruiting to fill their job positions want people who already have a job, which beggars belief as to what happens to the jobless population. Companies seem to rule out hiring a jobless applicant, with some actually writing on their job postings that “unemployed candidates will not be considered"or “must be currently employed,"which is probably the last thing a depressed individual on the dole wants to hear. It’s rather sad, particularly if someone was made redundant and now doors are shut to them precisely because they don’t have a job. The Current Climate has turned our lives into a misery, as well as having a job to apply for a job, every time a programme switches to an ad break there’s one advert or even two in which a company wants you to sell your house, your jewelry or your mobile phone to them for peanuts. It seems never ending, people can’t even make ends meet, they’ve just been made jobless so they are selling their last possessions and assets for some cash.

Despite the article being North American, this could easily be happening over here. I have a nephew who’s trying to apply for a job while in Uni, and he’s applied for over 30 and had no reply, or a rejection, could it be due to the fact that he doesn’t have a job?

With millions of varieties of plants and birds and insects and countries and holidays and wild roaming beasts and seas and beach resorts and night-clubs and tropical rain-storms and grand-prix races and rain-forests (and let’s not forget beautiful British weather) you’d think that every day would be a Let’s Celebrate The Earth Day! Sadly that isn’t so. According to the following post (which you can get to by hitting the link), there is only one official day when our great Planet is celebrated:

I can’t remember the last time that somebody – a business or otherwise – announced that they were considering throwing a Our Earth Is Wicked! party. It’s just not the kind of thing that businesses tend to do very well. But Enigin might well do this every single week if the aforementioned post is anything to go by. In fact, it’s remarkable they have a business left at all, what with all the celebrating.

Enigin care about the Earth, but let’s be honest, they also care a bit about money. Which is no bad thing, of course. I never have had a problem with people who admitted what they really believed in, and according to Enigin they believe in a lot of things that we all should a lot more if we want our planet to live on until the next millennium.

Now, I know roughly what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that talk is good, but action is better. And clearly Enigin don’t need to worry about becoming lazy any time soon. They have inventions that save you money, stuff which monitors your energy and a number of other things that can help make your home more energy efficient, the world a better place.

When it comes to having hobbies I find that it is very easy to have interest in a few different things. Actually having the time to invest in the hobby is something completely different though. There are many times where I would find myself having a few moments to enjoy a hobby and all I ended up doing was falling asleep on the couch. While any single working mother needs her sleep, there is also the need of some personal time. I had to make sure that I was making time for the things that are dedicated to my personal needs and desires. I’m not referring to going out and getting an affordable breast enlargement or anything. Just some simple things that I can do on my own personal time.

If I have about an extra half hour right after dropping the kids off at school I will run to get a pedicure. There is nothing that screams comfort to me then relaxing in a massage chair while your feet are soaked and pampered. Plus, a pedicure is a healthy thing for the feet so that acts as a bonus. If I feel as though I have a lot to do that day and my pedicure time is my only time then I will read a great book while having my feet worked on. This was working fine for a while but then there would always be, and have always been, the days where there is not even a half hour to spare. Plus, you can’t have a pedicure everyday so now what?

If I am truly rushing around to get things done I will use my earpiece connection for my cell phone and talk with a few friends while I complete housework. This is the best way to make sure that I am keeping up with what is going on in the lives of the people I care for without taking away either one of my hands or my ability to move around the house.

Why do so many women make such a big deal out of needing to wear make-up to go out of the house? Take me for example, I rarely wear make-up. Because of that nobody expects me too, and it’s never done me any harm.

Skin-care, as any woman worth her stockings knows, is where it’s at. Have good skin and you won’t need to worry about concealing that lovely face up. Think of it like stainless steel prison bars: would you rather have your skin free — free-range skin, if you like — or would you prefer to imprison it, trap it in the dark, starve it of sunlight? Because that’s what you’re doing if you cake your face in make-up. Personally, I think that a healthy, natural face is a much better look.

And I have asked men about this, don’t you worry. I did a quick survey in the pub the other week and the opinion was universal and unanimous: men (at least the men I hang out with and that were at the pub) like women who look as though they have real skin. Unsurprisingly, the plastic-wrapped face look didn’t even get a look in.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course. Like if you’re going out and you feel you need a confidence boost. But let’s keep it to special occasions, shall we? I think that if you do this then you’ll start to feel more confident in the face you were born with. With any luck you won’t feel the need to wear make-up half as much.

I work at a public relations agency and I have something to get off my ample chest. It is this: walking in high-heels is not that hard. It really isn’t. For years women have been moaning about this as though it’s as difficult as splitting an atom. While I have no idea about how to split an atom, I can safely say that walking in high-heels simply can’t be as hard as that. Here are my top tips for walking in high-heels.

1) Get some really high ones to start out with. Yes, you could start out with really low ones and work your way up, but why bother? The quicker you get accustomed to the biggies then the better.

2) Start out outside, in the domain of real people. Yes, you could just muck about trying to walk about your house / apartment, but it doesn’t have all the obstacles of the real world, does it? No. So get your butt out there and take it on. Go on, you can do it!

3) Walk with confidence, even if you have very little. Women – and this is every woman – are trained to spot a bad high-heels walker from a thousand yards. Get enough staring eyes together and that alone will be enough to send you flying.

4) Embrace the advice of other high-heels walkers. They know their stuff and are experienced! You’ll be surprised how many of these unapproachable looking women are actually pussy cats looking for an apprentice.

I, like many girls of a certain age (ahem, I may have had laser treatment once or twice and that’s al I’m saying about that…), remember the original theme-tunes to Home and Away and Neighbors. And how great they were! But then what’s this? The other day I turn Channel 5 on and what do I see and hear before me? Home and Away, of course–But somehow different–Not only different, but wrong: what I am speaking of, as you have probably already guessed, is the perversion of perfectly good theme-tunes. Why do it producers?! If you do feel the need to change it then why not change it completely? Why just change it a bit and let us old trusty fans suffer!

I wouldn’t have minded so much—after all, you can only hear the theme tune to a soap so many thousand times without going quite mad—only they had done things with the theme tune which were wholly unnecessary: sexed-up I think is the expression. And in doing so the innocence I had loved as a girl had been destroyed for all time!

You might notice I am a bit of a fan of Home and Away–

But I think I have every right to feel in distress about this. Us fans already have to cope with having lost our favourite actors for no reason at all, and now we are forced to accept these lesser modern day equivalent actors. I’m telling you, the only two things that brought a smile to my face when I watched that show the other day were these: 1) The Surf Shack was still in use and 2) Alf Stewart was still there!

Like everything in life, there is a right way to do something, a few other ways to do it and get away with it, and one way to do it that is simply WRONG: I am talking, as you probably already know if you work with scientists or American psychologists (they are two of the worst) about men who can spell hr management software backwards in two seconds and who cross their legs in that way that makes you think Does he have genitalia? If so, how is he able to do that without crushing it!

I’m not sure why I despise this so much; all I know is that the more intelligent the person, the more chance there is that they will be a culprit. The culprits’ level of crime ranges widely. You have those who do it and you feel sorry for them, then you have those who do it and you feel like throwing a vase at. These worst kind know they are sitting like this, and they practice doing it as often as they can.

To begin with I had only a mild hatred for these ‘camp sitters’, but over a period of years it has grown in to a monster. Nowadays I can’t be in the same room as a man who crosses their leg like this. Factors which increase the squeamish factor include the following: 1) interlocking the fingers and placing the hands on the lap. 2) Smiling sadistically while malevolently easing further and further back, thus making their crime more prominent. 3) swinging the foot to draw attention to the deed. There are hundreds more subtle ones, of course. What you see before you are just the general ones. It takes years of practice to recognize the really small additional factors.

As a young child I watched Mum make tea—ten cups simultaneously no less, which is still no less impressive—and I thought ‘that looks easy, I’m sure I can master that in a few goes’. How wrong was I! I was so wrong. Not only was I wrong, but I had hugely misunderstood the complexities of how to make a fine cup of tea. I had assumed that the spoon was simply a piece of metal, and that by dropping it in the cup the tea would make itself, providing I was there to oversee it. But alas no. My first attempt went horribly wrong and failed miserably. I can still remember the look on mum’s face. The devastated, horrified expression. It was as though I had just been set on fire and she was fighting to process all that terrible information.

It took four years for me to perfect the art of brewing (and that was only in the cup, let alone the teapot). For the first year and a half I was trembling too much at the thought of making a good cup of tea–and for the next year I was able to grip the spoon properly, but still not consistently making super-impressive tea. In the final year I cracked it, and I can still feel the pride. It makes a tea-lover teary eyed, that stuff. And now it is time for me to pass on my skills to the under-dogs. Those who are where I used to be: in that time when tea making seems akin to getting blood out of a stone.

So, here are a couple of tips and do not take a short-cut. 1) stir the tea-bag first then ram it up against the sides. 2) Leave for NO LESS than eight minutes. This is critical. The rest is up to you.

Good luck on your prestigious journey!

Speaking of prestigious journies, I think I have a solution for what we should put together for Rachel’s birthday bash. We should sort out some time at val disere chalet as a surprise. I know it is a little bit steep, however it is her 30th.

I never liked Whales. It’s strange. I mean, I love fish, but anything bigger than a mackerel concerns me. And whales are somewhat bigger than a mackerel. They are ma-hussive in fact. But here’s the thing: the picture at this blog concerned me.

Much as I can personally take or leave whales—leave if I have anything to do with it—this is shocking. It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter how big you are or how tough your skin is, human beings will always strive to be tougher, and that’s a frightening thought.

Being such a tenacious species that simply refuses to be wiped-out and die, we have little in common with the dinosaurs, so the comparison of their demise and the possibility of ours has always seemed strange to me. After all, dinosaurs didn’t have mobile phones, page 3 newspapers or GPS did they? No, they had dirt, grass and lots of rawwwwing to do. So our demise will take a bit more than it did for them, simply because of our level of awareness. When that disaster does eventually fall out of space and hit the earth, I’d be extremely surprised if we hadn’t thought of something to avoid it.

Enigin know that we can’t avoid everything. Avoiding is good for some things—like being chased by a Rhino, hiding from an attack of eggs thrown by malicious school-children, etc, but for everything else (such as climate change) it’s only postponing the inevitable. And we don’t want to do that, do we? Energy-saving dudes Enigin don’t really think that would be wise. Which is why they bring these shocking revelations to us, in order to let us know what the real deal is.
