www.howtogeek.com is one of those web-sites which makes me want to spit at the screen because I just don’t understand it. That’s because I am not, I repeat NOT a super geek (or even regular one). Things like HTML and coding don’t keep me awake at night, you see. If I find my eyes sighting a keyboard or a micro-chip I think ‘That’s a keyboard and that’s a micro-chip rather than, ’My life is now complete! My day continues on with my heart beating the same speed. And I do not have buck teeth (or too short trousers).
But howtogeek sort of caught my eye, I am ashamed to say. It’s one of those geek infested websites which is somehow cool as well as unashamedly spectacle wearing and nerdish.
I gave myself ten minutes—about as much geek as I could reasonably handle without my head imploding—and discovered many a thing. I can’t profess to be a geek or even remotely converted, but I will say that I do understand a bit more now about what it is to be a geek.
I discovered the following (slightly sickening) things: reviews, games and forums. The forums are where hordes of geeks gather in their thousands to swap the latest life-affirming stuff, and the games page is where you can download all kinds of things which are apparently much more fun that interacting with the outside world and tearing clothes off a very attractive woman / man.
But here’s the thing, I’m glad that sites like this exist, because it keeps all them geeks in one place! Not that I think they’re dangerous or anything, but come on, when you’re not a geek yourself–It scares you!
