National Insecurity.

So, here we go again. Because of the evil intentions of one man, we are set to go through an even higher level of security if we plan to get on a plane.
We have seen this all happen several times before. After the Twin Towers attack and the July 7th bombings the security at airports was ratcheted up many more times. The age that we are living in is one of paranoia. This is World War III in a way that no-one ever envisioned; not a nuclear or chemical apocalypse, but a full scale ground war where all are at constant risk.
Since the start of the ‘war on terror’, our lives have become increasingly difficult and all kinds of different things have been affected. Because of the unease created by extremists, it is now far more difficult to do something as mundane as opening a bank account. Security levels are so incredibly high and it is making life so awkward for ordinary people.
I should not really complain about any of it. I should not mind having to get on a plane without anything to drink, or being unable to take shampoo, deodorant or nail clippers in my luggage. After all, these measures have been put into place to keep us all safe. The only thing is that I do not think we actually are very safe.
If a man can still manage to board a plane with an explosive and the ‘fathers for justice’ can actually hit the Prime Minister with a powder-filled condom, then we cannot really be so far away from harm. No matter how tight security becomes there will always be a way for homicidal maniacs to attack the general public if that is what they want.
Up to now a lot of terror attacks have been averted merely by luck. The only reason for this latest one not going to plan is because the device failed to detonate. It was not because he had been spotted and stopped.
It is not a very nice thought, but I still see a major terrorist attack as being a very strong possibility. Our security forces cannot be everywhere at once and luck will not always be on our side. It is probably a case of when rather than if…
