Hart Felt Thanks.

When I was a kid, one of my greatest heroes on television was Tony Hart. Because of this, I was dead chuffed when I came across an article all about him on the BBC News website! It is written by Peter Lord of Aardman Animations, the creator of Morph (another of my greatest heroes on television!).

The best thing about Tony Hart was his calm enthusiasm. He managed to get virtually every child (and many an adult) in Britain having a go at drawing. There was just something about the guy that made trying to draw a picture irresistible. Like anyone who is good at something, he managed to make it all look incredibly simple. But the thing that made Tony Hart different from others was that he never came across as being a ‘big head’. There are very few presenters on television today who you could say that about…

Tony Hart may be gone but his gentle and unassuming nature will always be remembered by the generation who grew up with his programmes. Just like Johnny Ball made mathematics fun, Tony Hart succeeded in arousing every viewer’s curiosity in the creative arts. Suddenly you didn’t have to be ‘gifted’ at drawing; if you could hold a pencil then Tony Hart would show you how to use it.

And the efforts of many budding artists were displayed each week in ‘The Gallery’. Anyone who grew up with Tony Hart would see the inclusion of their work in his show as being far more precious than winning The Turner Prize.

Tony Hart was 83 years old when he died in January 2009. As the result of having two strokes, he had lost the use of his hands and his ability to draw. He once described this as; ‘The greatest cross I have to bear.’

For all of you that forgot, last week was my birthday, and my friend Oliva gave me a Medical micro-dermabrasion as a gift. Now I have to say, I have no idea what she was trying to relate me; but after I got over the corresponding surprise of how out of the ordinary the present was, I went and realized that it was actually quite wonderful. I would speak well of it to anyone
