Facial Skincare Issues during Pregnancy
There’s a common belief that women have a tendency to “glow” during pregnancy. However although you may find yourself in this fortunate position, it’s not going to be everyone’s experience so you need to be prepared in case you are one of those who’s skin has a negative change during pregnancy.
The skin changes are mainly caused by the hormones that run amok during a woman’s body throughout pregnancy. These hormones can help the skin keep moisture locked in and therefore providing the “glow” that a pregnant woman hopes for, or they can be the cause of redness. Whereas some people may have a supple blemish-free skin (perhaps for the first time in their lives), other women have to cope with scaly, dry skin and fight a war against spots. Even women who have never had a spot problem in their lives may find that they are coping with acne!
Those of you who find that your skin is less than perfect during pregnancy need to implement a good skincare routine that involves thorough cleansing using products such as a soap that’s glycerine based, or baby lotion as normal soap products will make the situation worse by removing more of the skin’s natural oils. Unless you have a toner that won’t dehydrate your skin, you should skip this part of your routine and instead give yourself a good application of moisturizer that you should massage carefully into your face. You may even want to consider using two different moisturizers; one that soaks quickly into your skin to hydrate the lower skin cells, and one that stays mainly to work on improving the top skin.
If you have a skin problem that does resemble that of a teenager with acne, then you shouldn’t use the products that are sold for that purpose. Instead try to counteract the hormones with a good routine as outlined above, and if it doesn’t improve ask your doctor if they can recommend a cream for you to use. You should also avoid picking at the spots as this can spread infection over you face which will make the situation worse rather than better!
For most pregnant women, the bad facial skin problems only last for the first two trimesters. After this the hormones start to direct themselves elsewhere and your face will start to look healthier – and by maintaining the healthy skincare routine you’ve been using thus far, you’ll ensure that you glow up to childbirth and beyond!
